I have to be honest… When I first arrive here with 11 other individuals I wasn’t too excited. We usually complete our rooms as a duo – MAYBE a foursome. I was going to have to just sit back on a couch and enjoy watching the chaos. When the host at the desk read through the scenario on a clipboard I was worried even further that the live actors I’d heard about were not going to be that engaging. We’d also had the perception that Secret City was a bit of a stuck up escape room built in a tourist trap… Boy… Was I wrong on all accounts.
After completing the intro we were immediately joined by one of the best live actors I’ve seen in a Canadian escape room. He brought us to the room where he introduced us to another character, and then another, all interacting very naturally with each other and with our very large group. Those characters ended up playing a pivotal role in the story telling for the next hour, gently guiding us towards success with some of the best subtle nudges we’ve seen. The intro and conclusion to this room were fantastic providing a complete story-based experience.
After being seated together in the main area of this experience we were then encouraged by the character, not the host, but the character, to split into some groups to solve this problem. Our three teams of four were then each sent to a different room to solve a problem. Everyone was able to participate and contribute without getting in each other’s way. Am I really saying this? YES. A room that actually facilitated 12 people comfortably. Although our host later said that the room can be adjusted for as few as two players, I think you’ll get the most out of this room by having at least six. If you know our reviews you know we like our space. Six players to 12 players will be perfect in this room. It can accommodate up to 15 however and is a great corporate escape room option.
The decor itself is excellent with everything in good condition and not too much wear and tear. Each room has the right ambient lighting but only a couple of audio cues were present. There is consideration made to every surface including the flooring and ceiling although we suspect not a whole lot was needed considering the venue.
The puzzles were well thought out with no combination locks whatsoever and only a few keyed locks. The rest are very thoughtful puzzles that will challenge a wide range of skills. All of the puzzles were logical and worked well with the story.
I was very happy with this room and the hosts were fantastic, completely shattering my preconceptions about Secret City. We’re looking forward to returning to complete more of their rooms.
In short, yes, book this room now!
