Criminals around the world are dying of inexplicable heart attacks. This cannot be a mere coincidence, and the faceless mass murderer became known as “Kira”. The world famous detective L has sent you, an accomplished FBI agent, to Japan to assist in the investigation. Your mission is to infiltrate the room of Light Yagami, a high school student and a prime suspect. However you were ambushed and locked inside. Complete your mission by discovering Kira’s secrets is the only way to defeat Kira before he can kill you!
Admittedly, this seems to be a very well-constructed room based on a TV series we knew nothing about. That does affect our perception of it because we weren’t wowed by the nostalgia of it as others may be and so we looked at it more objectively, maybe? Because of some intentional design choices, the room comes across as a bit flat at times and some puzzle elements don’t completely make sense if you don’t know the show.
The room was fairly immersive but, of course, was harmed by the damage done by the typical yobs who try to see if things are hidden behind wallpaper or inside of a clock radio. It has a dark and creepy atmosphere that is occasionally interrupted by noise from adjoining rooms but is otherwise pretty cool.
The puzzles are well thought out and logical and, as far as we know, fit the theme. There was one thing that was atypical for escape rooms which made it seem like either a prop was broken or it was intended that the item didn’t work. Breaking away from some expectations of escape roomers can hurt the experience. Spoiler: In this case, a flashlight with a battery inserted the wrong way.
The general experience is very good but we’d like to see some more atmospheric effects, a more noticeable change in the environment as you progress, or some actor/staff involvement. I think they’re on to something with this room but it needs some finishing touches.
